In a recent keynote speech at the SAP Developers Kick Off Meeting (DKOM), Electronic Ink CEO and author of 'Wrench in the System', Harold Hambrose, revealed how design is the key driver for business technology success.
“Design is more than just a luxury; it is the means by which advanced technology is made accessible to the masses,” he explained.
Often, technology’s explosive growth results in more complicated procedures, working against users instead of with them. With development processes like Waterfall and Agile, the software industry concerns itself only with satisfying a set of functional requirements for these complicated procedures, rather than designing usable products. Shifting from a software development approach to a product development approach, where design is introduced at the onset, is vital for success.
Hambrose argues that design is a business innovation imperative. Before writing a line of code, design encourages a complete understanding of the user necessary for improving the way people interact with technology, environments, and one another. Designers’ sketches and early models express an idea and present a common vision, so users can see the product before it is produced. As a result, budgets are not consumed on unnecessary software development.
Training, documentation, development, and dissatisfaction are expensive. Only by introducing the design process to development can technology companies fully exploit innovation.
Addressing next steps for businesses that want to refresh their business systems, Hambrose makes recommendations and provides an example for designing products with more efficient, friendlier systems that build productivity and morale, user interfaces that reduce internal training costs, and functionality that users will enthusiastically embrace.
