As an orga­ni­za­tion matures in its EAM process, so do its report­ing require­ments.  A key ben­e­fit of any SAP imple­men­ta­tion is the report­ing it pro­vides.  Report­ing should nev­er be a rigid or painstak­ing process.  On the con­trary, it should be the result of excel­lent Mas­ter Data orga­nized in a stan­dard man­ner that pro­vides flu­id and use­ful infor­ma­tion to any user at any lev­el of the organization. 

The best advice I can give any­one start­ing an EAM imple­men­ta­tion is to focus on mas­ter data from the begin­ning.  SAP’s incred­i­ble wealth of data points allows reports to be manip­u­lat­ed on the fly to answer ques­tions that were once tedious to research and semi-reli­able at best.  Once an orga­ni­za­tion sets stan­dards and under­stands what each piece of mas­ter data brings to the ​“report­ing table”, report­ing can actu­al­ly become a pos­i­tive and excit­ing process.

To explain how Mas­ter Data works at Den­bury, our team devel­oped and coined the phrase:

The Report­ing Onion

 ​“Report­ing so good, it makes you Cry.”

The onion is the body of report­ing that con­tains the lay­ers of mas­ter data we use to gath­er infor­ma­tion about the assets we oper­ate.  In the past, an enor­mous Gen­er­al Ledger (G/L) and thou­sands of cost cen­ters were relied on to describe work being done in oper­a­tions.  Nat­u­ral­ly, Cod­ing errors / incon­sis­ten­cies and inter­pre­ta­tions of what G/L & cost cen­ter com­bi­na­tion to use caused numer­ous issues.   To cre­ate use­ful asset based reports, end users were required to man­u­al­ly review invoic­es and cre­ate spread­sheets to ana­lyze spend.  The intro­duc­tion of SAP EAM and strong mas­ter data changed this for Denbury. 

Now, stan­dard process­es like build­ing a work order, procur­ing goods and ser­vices & con­firm­ing time bring a pletho­ra of mas­ter data that is used to make quick, reli­able and use­ful reports.  End users are unknow­ing­ly build­ing great reports sim­ply by doing their every­day jobs.  The mas­ter data is built once and the results are con­sis­tent, reli­able and repeat­able reports that can be sliced and diced to tell a sto­ry that was only once dreamt about.  Infor­ma­tion need­ed to make deci­sions has nev­er been eas­i­er to obtain.  You are just a few clicks away.
