Over the last five years, the veloc­i­ty, vol­ume and vari­ety of change in the world has increased pro­found­ly, large­ly due to advances in tech­nolo­gies such as arti­fi­cial intel­li­gence and robot­ics. Over 40% of the com­pa­nies that were at the top of the For­tune 500 in 2000 were no longer there in 2010.  In the past busi­ness mod­els could last for 100 years pro­vid­ed that ener­gy and resources were focused on scal­ing the busi­ness mod­el and being more effi­cient than the com­pe­ti­tion.  The indus­tri­al era is not com­ing back.  Today, the aver­age life of a com­pa­ny is 15 years.  In an effort to com­pete and sur­vive, suc­cess­ful orga­ni­za­tions are respond­ing by rethink­ing, re-imag­in­ing and reset­ting their busi­ness mod­els, orga­ni­za­tion struc­tures, process­es, prod­ucts and ser­vices.  Focus, ener­gy and resources are shift­ing from effi­cien­cy to effec­tive­ness and rel­e­van­cy.  These trans­for­ma­tion­al shifts are result­ing in fun­da­men­tal changes to the way we live, work and relate to one another.
 
The new econ­o­my requires that com­pa­nies, their employ­ees and their lead­ers be fit, agile, focused and recep­tive to change, risk and ambi­gu­i­ty.  Suc­cess­ful com­pa­nies in this new era high­ly val­ue those with an insa­tiable curios­i­ty for learn­ing and those who are cre­ative and inno­v­a­tive.  How can indi­vid­ual employ­ees and lead­ers become more effec­tive and rel­e­vant to help them­selves and their com­pa­nies suc­ceed?  Just as com­pa­nies are hav­ing to rein­vent them­selves for suc­cess in the Dig­i­tal Age, each of us must rein­vent our­selves to be of suc­cess­ful and of value.
