The time to act is now and we need to recon­sid­er our rela­tion­ship with plas­tic, espe­cial­ly sin­gle use plas­tic. The con­cerns are valid with the asso­ci­at­ed pol­lu­tion and dis­pos­al to land­fills, streams, rivers, and the many ocean plas­tic garbage patch­es. This urgency leads to pub­lic poli­cies to imple­ment plas­tic tax­es and enable extend­ed pro­duc­er respon­si­bil­i­ties in post-con­sumer con­sump­tion. Com­pa­nies are not act­ing fast enough with emp­ty promis­es and lack lus­ter results. With only about 9% of plas­tics being recy­cled, we need to rethink the lin­ear mod­el of: take – make – and waste. By clos­ing the loop, and embrac­ing a cir­cu­lar mod­el, there is a need to recy­cle, reuse, reduce vir­gin mate­ri­als, and design out waste and pol­lu­tion.
