Over the last decade, most utilities running SAP applications have invested tremendous effort in planning for and executing the migration from SAP ECC to S/4HANA. While these programs were often positioned as transformational, many utilities understandably concentrated on replacing technology, preserving business continuity, and meeting deadlines.

Today, as the dust settles on those investments, utility leaders are asking a more important question:

Now that we have modernized our platform, how do we modernize the way the business operates?

The answer lies at the intersection of process intelligence, business AI, and autonomous operations.

Many utilities already own the building blocks. SAP Signavio, which provides process intelligence, is frequently included within broader SAP agreements, as is Joule, which has emerged as the centerpiece of SAP’s Business AI strategy. AI capabilities are becoming embedded across SAP applications, while Business Data Cloud provides the foundation for connected enterprise intelligence.

The challenge is orchestrating these capabilities to create measurable business outcomes.

From Digital Utility to Autonomous Utility

The utility industry is no stranger to automation. Decades ago, utilities transformed grid operations, generation facilities, meter reading, and control center activities through increasing levels of automation. Systems evolved from simply reporting conditions to actively monitoring, predicting, and responding to operational events.

Business processes are now entering a similar evolution. Traditional enterprise systems digitized work. Workflow automation accelerated work. Artificial intelligence is now taking the baton and enabling systems to understand work, and then facilitating the autonomous execution of work.

The progression is significant: from digital systems that record transactions and automated systems that execute deterministic (predefined) rules, to AI systems that understand business context and autonomous systems that continuously learn, decide, and act.

This evolution extends beyond reducing labor effort; it fundamentally changes how utilities operate by preventing issues before they impact customers, employees, or financial results.

Why Signavio Matters More Than Ever

One of the most common questions utility executives ask is, We already document our processes. Why do we need Signavio?”

Traditional process documentation tells you how work is supposed to happen; Signavio reveals how it is actually happening.

Using process mining and process intelligence, Signavio analyzes real SAP transactional data, reconstructing end-to-end process execution across billing, customer service, work management, asset maintenance, finance, and meter-to-cash operations.

The insights are often eye-opening:

  • Billing exception processes believed to be linear reveal unexpected loops and rework cycles.
  • Customer service activities differ dramatically between regions and organizations.
  • Work order processes contain hidden delays that were invisible in traditional reporting.
  • High-volume manual activities consume thousands of labor hours annually without anyone realizing their true cost.

These findings create a digital blueprint for autonomy. Before AI can fix a process, the organization must understand where friction exists and quantify its impact, and Signavio provides that intelligence layer.

Where Joule Changes the Equation

Historically, process mining identified problems. Humans fixed them. Joule changes that model.

By combining process intelligence, business context, SAP application knowledge, and enterprise data, Joule enables utilities to move from detecting issues to resolving them automatically.

Take billing exceptions. Signavio identifies recurring patterns causing invoice delays. Joule understands the affected process, determines likely root causes, interacts with relevant SAP applications, and recommends or executes corrective actions. What was once a reporting exercise becomes a self-improving process.

This is where SAP’s vision for autonomous business operations becomes reality. Signavio identifies opportunities. Joule acts on them. AI continuously learns from outcomes. The organization becomes progressively more efficient over time.

Meter-to-Cash: The Ideal Starting Point

For most utilities, the meter-to-cash process represents the perfect proving ground for autonomy.

The process is highly structured:

Meter Read → Billing → Invoicing → Payment → Financial Posting

The data is abundant, the exceptions are measurable, and the business impact is immediate.

Every day, utilities process thousands or millions of transactions through this value chain. While most succeed, a small percentage become exceptions requiring manual intervention.

These exceptions generate substantial operational costs: delayed revenue recognition, customer dissatisfaction, increased call center volume, manual correction activities, and regulatory risk.

Using Signavio, utilities can identify exactly where these exceptions occur, how often they occur, and their financial impact. Using Joule and AI, utilities can then automate detection, root cause analysis, and remediation.

At Cognizant, we have expanded this vision further through industry-specific AI solutions built on SAP BTP that combine process intelligence (Signavio), SAP Business AI, utility industry expertise, autonomous exception management, and predictive process monitoring.

The result is a continuously improving meter-to-cash operation capable of resolving significant volumes of exceptions without human intervention.

Start With Known Problems, Not New Technology

One misconception surrounding AI initiatives is that organizations must discover new use cases.

But utilities already know where their problems are:

  • Billing exceptions
  • Work order backlog
  • Financial reconciliation delays
  • Service order failures
  • Payroll discrepancies
  • Regulatory reporting effort
  • Call center inefficiencies

The opportunity is to make these challenges visible through data and address them through intelligent automation.

The most successful autonomous utility programs start with processes that are high volume, repetitive, rules-based, data-rich, measurable, and operationally significant.

Success in one process often creates momentum for broader transformation across the enterprise.

People Remain Central to the Autonomous Enterprise

An autonomous utility is not a utility without people.

In reality, autonomy allows organizations to make better use of their most valuable resource: employee expertise. The employees resolving exceptions today possess knowledge that no process model can fully capture. Their expertise becomes the intelligence used to train, refine, govern, and continuously improve autonomous processes. Technology executes repetitive activities. People focus on judgment, innovation, customer engagement, and exception management. The objective is workforce elevation — not workforce reduction.

Cognizant’s Role: Orchestrating AI Into Business Outcomes

Technology alone does not create value. Utilities need a partner that understands both the technology landscape and the operational realities of the industry. Cognizant’s role as an AI Builder is to orchestrate the complete ecosystem:

SAP Signavio + SAP Joule + Business AI + SAP BTP + Utility Process Expertise

We help utilities move beyond experimentation and focus on measurable outcomes:

  • Faster billing cycles
  • Reduced exception volumes
  • Increased operational efficiency
  • Improved regulatory compliance
  • Better customer experiences
  • Lower operating costs
  • Higher workforce productivity

Every initiative starts with a business outcome, a defined owner, and measurable success criteria, because AI is only valuable when it delivers operational results.

The Road to the Autonomous Utility

Thirty years ago, implementing SAP itself was transformative. Ten years ago, migrating to S/4HANA became the transformation agenda. Today, S/4HANA is merely the foundation.

The next competitive advantage will come from utilities that can continuously sense, learn, decide, and act across their operations with minimal manual intervention.

The roadmap already exists.

  • Signavio reveals how work actually happens.
  • Joule understands the business context.
  • AI enables intelligent action.
  • Business Data Cloud connects the enterprise.

Together, they create the foundation for the Autonomous Utility, enabling utilities to move beyond system modernization and begin transforming how the business actually operates.
