Bal­anc­ing cost, risk, and per­for­mance in the best sense of ISO 55001 requires a lot of infor­ma­tion for deci­sion-mak­ing. While all of the under­ly­ing data might be avail­able some­where, today it is still most­ly stored in a very het­ero­ge­neous land­scape of sys­tem, if not even sit­ting in the brains of the workers.

The chal­lenges for asset man­age­ment have not changed too much. Orga­ni­za­tions have to cal­cu­late cap­i­tal ver­sus oper­a­tional expen­di­tures, they have to make sure their oper­a­tions are effec­tive, effi­cient and safe, and they have to stay com­pli­ant with all sorts of reg­u­la­tions and stake­hold­er expec­ta­tions. But, in today’s world, busi­ness process­es span many more orga­ni­za­tion than ever before, cus­tomers are much bet­ter infor­ma­tion, and com­pe­ti­tion has dra­mat­i­cal­ly increased.

On the oth­er hand, there are a lot of oppor­tu­ni­ties using new tech­nolo­gies to meet these chal­lenges. IT and OT appli­ca­tions are con­verg­ing. Big Data is a chal­lenge, but also an oppor­tu­ni­ty when lever­ag­ing pre­dic­tive ana­lyt­ics. Asset might be sold as a ser­vice while trans­paren­cy about their per­for­mance can be obtained via the Inter­net of Things. And final­ly, infor­ma­tion is much more acces­si­ble using cloud and mobile applications.
