American Water encountered a problem with leveraging advanced metering infrastructure (MI) data to bill customers and provide proactive notifications to customers. It also needed to provide interval data to customers and customer representatives to better support their business needs.

To solve this, American Water partnered with SAP to implement its first Cloud for Energy (C4E) implementation in North America by bringing 3.2 meters into the solution. American Water and SAP used a co-innovation approach to deliver the C4E project for American Water.

This involved moving data from more than five head-end systems directly into C4E. American Water also fulfilled meter-read orders without using a truck to get the reads. This solution also provides data to the customer portal so customers can look at consumption. SAP IS-U and C4E integration provides operational excellence and proactive handling of meter issues to save revenue for an organization.
