SAP Business Technology Platform (BTP), often called the “Swiss Army Knife of SAP,” provides a robust set of tools to address a variety of business challenges. As a Platform as a Service (PaaS), SAP BTP allows businesses to build, manage, and deploy cloud applications efficiently. The platform offers tools tailored for every line of business, including Finance, HR, and Supply Chain.
ASUG members utilizing the platform expressed that although they are enthusiastic about the value these offerings provide, they feel overwhelmed when trying to navigate its complexity. The tension between the platform’s potential and the user’s reality was expressed in sentiments like: “We hear about [SAP] BTP all the time, but I’m still not sure how to actually use it day to day,” and “I feel like everyone else is further along, and I’m playing catch-up.”
The ASUG Communities team took these feelings as calls to action and is now focused on addressing challenges and questions directly with SAP experts and their peers, helping members gain clarity on the platform and, in some instances, providing SAP with a peek into what the user experience actually looks like.
The Strategic Role of Community
Online communities can play a strategic role in their participants’ growth. The ASUG SAP BTP Community exemplifies this in its curation of members around shared curiosity, lived experience, and a collective journey of learning, building, and problem-solving.
This practitioner-led member base spans multiple maturity levels and roles; within the business ecosystem, the ASUG SAP BTP Community is made up of people who are either building on SAP BTP today, actively preparing to do so, or experts on the SAP BTP platform. They are unified by a shared desire to progress along a transformation journey rather than remain static. This network aligns on problem-solving and applied value, not just product awareness.
Intentional Community Evolution
We didn’t arrive at this point by accident. Where we stand as a community in 2026 is the direct result of a conscious decision to remove historical silos in messaging and connect members more intentionally.
Our evolution as a community came from listening. Members shared that they felt they were operating in isolation, and that messaging and content was fragmented.
In January of 2025, Kelly Dowling, ASUG Director, Product Strategy – Communities, sat down with community members to understand what needed to change, what was truly working, and where real value existed. Through a series of member-focused dialogue exchanges, she developed a plan to reimagine how communities were engaged and how communication was delivered. “We realized we were in a position to rewrite the playbook, and that we didn’t have to keep doing things a certain way simply because of legacy processes,” explained Dowling.
The result: growth and connection multiplied throughout 2025. Based on internal ASUG SAP BTP engagement tracking, community participation accelerated across multiple touchpoints, including increased attendance at virtual events, sustained growth in community membership, and rising engagement with BTP-focused resources.
“I am a functional lead in our Analytics Center of Excellence at Owens Corning, so I like to attend the ASUG sessions to try and fill in some of the gaps that I have with the technical changes that SAP is implementing. Our technical team already knows a lot of these things, so I leverage this forum to get some extra exposure to the roadmap changes and how it will impact me as I work with our users to develop reporting and analytics solutions.
The second reason I try to attend the ASUG events is to hear from folks in similar roles at other companies who may have already learned what is coming my way soon, so that I can take advantage of any best practice sharing or tips and tricks that will help me to accelerate the transition to newer and more modern reporting tools at Owens Corning.” — ASUG SAP BTP Community Member Nick Busse
Content aligned to practical BTP use cases consistently ranked among the most viewed assets, reinforcing that members were not only showing up, but actively engaging in a member-driven learning experience. These offerings reframed the ASUG SAP BTP Community from an idea into a shared learning journey.
Ecosystem of Support
Solution-focused deliverables, along with ongoing opportunities to engage, cultivate an ecosystem of support for the SAP BTP community, inspiring members to consistently connect, share experiences, and stay current with the rapid changes within the SAP BTP landscape.
Community Conversations normalized uncertainty and encouraged open dialogue with deep-dive sessions, grounded SAP BTP in real use cases and examples. The new Home Base emails became a trusted, repeatable touchpoint. Resource Centers and Content Collections reduced content clutter by surfacing what matters most. The First Five Newsletter and the ASUG Talks Podcast actively support the community with curated content covering integration, real-world use cases, SAP’s data strategy, SAP’s AI strategy, and other high-value practical topics, and the private LinkedIn group took peer connections to a deeper level.
The community began to shift from isolated and overwhelmed to supported. “Having access to experts in various areas, such as this session, is very useful and a great opportunity for all of us to get answers on our questions from the experts,” one community member said. ASUG SAP BTP members consistently praise having access to knowledgeable SAP experts, practical use cases, and clear explanations of complex topics. Attendees applauded the importance of real-world relevance, noting that sessions were “not only theoretical” but included “concrete use cases and examples,” and that presenters “allowed the concepts to be well understood in context.”
SAP Business Data Cloud Focus
For the members of the SAP BTP Community who work with SAP Business Data Cloud (BDC), this transformation has been particularly meaningful. With nearly 20% of the ASUG SAP BTP Community focused on this pillar, previous sentiments revealed that BDC users had difficulty finding resources to support them.
“It’s hard to find BDC resources that are relevant to my role or current projects,” and “I often feel like I’m missing key updates in BDC; I don’t know where to start,” shared one member during a recent session.
However, as the Communities model evolved, clarity and support surfaced. Members were now sharing, “The BDC examples in the session made it easier to see how I could implement these integrations,” and “Seeing real BDC use cases helped me understand what’s possible, instead of just theoretical talk.”
The SAP BTP Resource Center usage increased for BDC content when highlighted in the Home Base emails, which provide members with easy access to relevant resources. This content aligns closely with BDC-focused sessions, creating a dynamic intersection of learning and support. Members reported, “BDC resources now feel accessible, I can go back and learn at my own pace,” and “I now know which BDC tools and integrations to explore for my projects.”
Together, the Home Base, Resource Center content, and BDC sessions worked as a connected framework, helping members actively consume information, gain confidence, and apply BDC knowledge to real use cases.
Looking Ahead: Advanced Adoption
ASUG Communities are not just delivering focused SAP BTP content. They are encouraging capability, confidence, and connection and turning BTP adoption into a shared community experience.
While the transformation is clear, the journey isn’t over. Members are now asking better, more advanced questions, which is a strong indicator of maturity. Ongoing needs include role-specific and industry-specific BTP guidance, deeper dives into architecture, integration, and AI use cases, clearer pathways from learning to implementation, and continued peer benchmarking, asking, “How are others actually doing this?”
This continued evolution reinforces the ASUG Communities’ original purpose: transforming a collection of SAP BTP users into a connected, learning-driven community where members actively share, learn, and solve challenges together.
The ASUG SAP BTP Community is where builders, learners, and innovators come together. Whether you’re just beginning to explore BTP or you’re deep into implementation, there’s a place for you here. Join the ASUG SAP BTP Community to be part of a network where goals and challenges are shared and successes are celebrated.
